LONDON SKIES

Upon booking my trip to London, England to visit my new friend, Shea — I had no idea that I’d actually truly fall in love with this city. I’d come to the belief that London was a drab city that was constantly overcast and raining. I thought I’d go, see the sites, hang out with Shea, eat some fish & chips and head back to Madrid. However, it was so much more than that. I arrived in London and was instantly pleased to be back in an English speaking country. I didn’t have to worry about using shotty mimicry in order to figure out how to get around — however, my bus driver ended up being from Valencia, Spain so we chatted in Spanish after he gave me directions on how to get to the tube. I met Shea after my bus got into the city and we headed off from there. The skies were cloudy, but it wasn’t enough to keep the warm air close to the ground. It was quite a chilly March …

PASTA! PIZZA! LASAGNA! THE FOOD OF MY TRAVELS

I’ve decided it’s about time to write about my eating habits. As they’ve been non-consistent, but delicious — I really want to write about these tasty foods (and some not so great) that I’ve encountered while in Europe. FIRST! I want to say — Maine is the homeland of Seafood. DELICIOUS. Seafood. But somehow, London *yes, they were around before us chaps settled our lovely state and industry* is famous for their fish & chips. Maybe I should read into the history of this phenomena more, buuut, that’d just be too easy. I’ll let it baffle me. So, obviously the first time I make a visit to London-town in March of 2011 I wanted to try the famous fish & chips — but, the two day venture was too quick for my taste buds so I left the country without having tried the main dish. This time around I wouldn’t allow that to happen. As soon as I arrived in London to visit my lovely friend we made a list of must-do activities while I …

WRITING, A DYING ART

Today a stranger approached me in the park and asked what I was writing. I had seen him and his grand daughter stroll past me earlier as I lay in the grass, writing in my journal on Primrose Hill in London. His presence startled me as I hadn’t seen him walking towards me. He introduced his grand daughter, Sofia, and then began to ask what I was writing. I shared with him & Sofia that I have been traveling for the past three months by myself and I found it comforting to write in my journal about my experiences and reflect on everything I’ve seen and done. He explained to me how he was very impressed with my act of writing pen to paper. It’s a dying art, you see. For me, writing has always been apart of my life. Since elementary school we learned the proper way to draw letters from print to cursive. We were graded on our ability to produce clearly written letters, and I was good at it. Maybe that’s why …

WHERE’D ALL MY MONEY GO? OH RIGHT, COFFEE

I didn’t realize how much money my trip would cost overall. I couldn’t be bothered to really think ahead and budget . . I decided to just go with the flow. Turns out, I ended up spending a little more than planned — surprise, surprise. I can say for sure that I lived well these past few months for only spending money and not earning any along my travels. I ate well. I stayed in nice hostels. I stayed with wonderful Couch Surfing hosts. I even bought a few clothes. I paid for most of my major transport prior to leaving the US in January, so not much of the money I had went towards that . . which in the end was one of the smarter decisions I made. Looking back on all my purchases throughout these past three months I can safely say there are a few things I shouldn’t have bothered to buy — but hey, that’s life. But nothing I bought has been useless or not somewhat worth it. The majority …
